BBC News – US HIV baby ‘cured’ by early drug treatment.

A baby girl in the US born with HIV appears to have been cured after very early treatment with standard drug therapy, doctors say.

The Mississippi child is now two-and-a-half years old and has been off medication for about a year with no signs of infection.

More testing needs to be done to see if the treatment – given within hours of birth – would work for others.

If the girl stays healthy, it would be the world’s second reported ‘cure’…….

  1. Skeptics said that this story of the cure child is not really conclusive. They say that the baby – although at high risk for contracting the virus from her mother – was not actually infected. This story shows no actual proof that the child was indeed born with HIV. On the other hand it mentions that the baby, being at high risk of infection, was placed on treatment even before laboratory investigations had been done. That being said, doctors agree that the child was most likely infected, so it remains a story of hope 🙂
