On December 1st and 2nd, 2012- Tewa Women United will be hosting the first ever Northern New Mexico Birth Summit. This summit is being created for the purpose of sharing and integrating childbirth experiences from New Mexico’s different cultural perspectives, exploring and improving the pregnancy, birth, and early childhood parenting experience of every woman in our larger NM community, and increasing the number of birthworkers in our community. The Summit will provide us an unparalleled opportunity to explore both ancient and modern wisdom from our rich and diverse Northern NM traditions. This will be a space of learning and sharing that will go beyond the typical “public health” paradigm to include frameworks and approaches that come out of grassroots and cultural communities. This event is open to midwives, doulas, breastfeeding specialists, maternal mental health providers, doctors, nurses, educators, students-and anyone who has a special place in their hearts for New Mexico’s families. Although there will be some notable, national speakers, the summit will be highlighting the amazing work that is being done within our own state by the very people who are taking care of our communities. We know that by gathering such a strong group of people in one place- we will not only create a momentum for change but will also inspire a whole new generation of birthworkers and community collaborations.
As a kickoff event, a special Silent Auction and Fundraising Dinner will be hosted on November 30th, 2012. All proceeds will benefit TWU’s Yiya Vi Kagingdi Doula Program.
Please join us for this exciting and groundbreaking experience. Space is limited-so be sure to register early!
